May 2008 Are your online marketing strategies recession proof?

"Easy Come ... Easy Go"

It is a simple fact that visitors will leave your website - but do you know why? When was the last time you actually tested your website's performance? Ask yourself the following three questions:

1. How are visitors getting to your website?

Do you know where they are coming from? Without analyzing average time spent on your site and bounce rates from your different traffic sources, you won't know what sources you should be spending most of your money on.

Do you know where your visitors are going on your website? Path analysis is a process of determining the sequence of pages visited prior to some desired event and a great way to finding out how your visitors are - or are not - moving through your site.

A/B testing is an excellent way in which to test different versions of entry pages on your website such as a landing page or the home page in determining the best copy, graphics, colors, or layout that will easily guide your visitors to reach their desired goal. Valid testing equals greater ROI!

2. Where are visitors leaving your site - and why?

No visitor stays forever - but have you looked at your exit and bounce rates to determine which web pages might not be performing up to the expectations of visitors? The analysis of specific exit data is extremely important in order to uncover how best to convert more visitors.

3. Have you reviewed the conversion points on your website?

If you've analyzed the issues regarding the website's entry and exit pages, but consumers still aren't making it to conversion points, now what? Are visitors leaving in the check out process or a registration page? Once again, A/B testing is the best way to test various layouts and calls-to-action on critical pages.

Don't rely on "guessing" to improve website performance. Keeping a close eye on your website metrics and continue to test critical web pages!
