July 2008 Is Your Website Pushing or Pulling?

Based upon fifty years of television, would anyone doubt that people have proven they prefer watching information rather than reading it? No doubt you've noticed over the past year there has been quite a growth of videos on websites and blogs. Using videos online to convey your message is not the future, it is happening now!

A recent study conducted by the Online Publishers Association, found that "69 percent of online users have watched a video online and 24 percent do so at least once a week."

Online video, whether viewing a 15 to 30-second clip or several minutes, can be an excellent communication medium that can target your audience in a quick and cost-effective manner - from an introductory video of your company, a sales presentation piece, customer testimonials, news and events or viral branding - the possibilities are endless.

How can businesses use a video online to its advantage? Let's take a look at some of the possibilities that online marketing videos would add to your website, emails, blogs, online advertisements and more.

Get Your Message "Watched" - A video can be used to describe a product or service in detail, without any confusion. It's not a surprise that the average person online has a very short attention span - even though from an SEO advantage, a web page needs around 250 words of relevant copy, users scan copy, or might not read it at all. You'll have a potential customer's full attention, if the video is compelling and tuned in to your viewer's needs or problems.

Educate Your Visitors - Wouldn't you agree that it is easier for a visitor to watch a short video than it is to "hope" that they read and understand a simple point, technique or promotion?

Spread the Word - With an informative or entertaining video, it is possible for a business to gain high recognition for their brands by having users circulate the video online for you. A good video is a great way to spread the product or brand and placing videos on search engines using strong keywords and taglines is another successful way of gaining video recognition.

So you might want to consider getting your visitor's attention by supplementing some of your website content with video - "watching" an engaging and informative online video can be a powerful tool for any business.

Here are some initial reputation management tools you may want to consider:

1. Sign up for Google and Yahoo email alerts using your business name

2. Track any mentions on appropriate message boards/forums/blogs

3. Create custom RSS feeds based on keyword searches
